More people, bigger cities, and a changing way of life—what’s ahead for Australia?
Picture This…
It’s 2034. You’re heading into the city for work, but the train is more packed than ever. New high-rises have popped up in once-quiet suburbs, and finding a rental feels tougher than buying a house used to be. The news is full of stories about an ageing population, shifting job markets, and the ever-growing demand for housing.
Australia is changing—and fast.
The Growth We Didn’t Expect
While much of the world is slowing down, Australia’s population is still growing. Right now, we’re sitting at around 27 million, but in just ten years, that number will jump to 31 million. By 2064, it’ll be over 41 million.
Where’s the growth coming from?
Migration: Australia remains a top destination, even with tighter visa rules and shifting policies.
Longer lifespans: With people living longer, our economy, housing, and healthcare systems will need to adjust.
City expansion: Urban centres are growing nearly twice as fast as regional areas, creating new challenges for transport, housing, and infrastructure.
How Life Will Change
Cities will feel the squeeze. More people means longer commutes, busier roads, and greater demand for public transport. Some areas will thrive, while others struggle to keep up with the pace of change.
Housing will look different. As prices climb and space becomes scarce, the demand for smaller, more flexible housing will rise. Affordability will remain a key issue, with many opting for apartment living over traditional homes.
The workforce will shift. The average Australian will be 40 years old by 2034. Fewer young workers mean businesses will need to rethink how they attract and retain talent, while industries like healthcare and aged care will need major investment.
Not all states will grow equally. Victoria and Western Australia are set to expand the fastest, while South Australia and Tasmania will see much slower growth. In Queensland, Brisbane will officially become home to over half the state’s population.
What Does This Mean for You?
Australia in 2034 will be very different from today. Whether you’re planning a career move, looking at property, or thinking about investment, understanding these trends will be key to staying ahead.
The choices we make now—how we build, plan, and adapt—will shape the future of our cities, jobs, and communities.
The question is, are we ready?
